Many times we think bigger is better but when it comes to rugs selection room proportions are important. We don’t want the area rug to look like wall-to-wall carpet. All furniture Legs need to be on the Rug!
Placing all your furniture on the rug regardless of room size creates a cohesive, intentional look that grounds your space. A properly sized rug acts as a unifying foundation, tying all elements together and making the room feel well-proportioned. When furniture pieces sit fully on the rug, the space appears visually balanced, avoiding the disjointed feel of floating or partially placed pieces.
The front feet of your furniture pieces should be on the rug and the rug should extend under the piece by at least 4 to 6 inches.

Large Spaces and Open Concept Living Rooms
For large spaces and open-concept living rooms, a rug that allows for all four feet of your sofa and chairs on the rug may be a great option. This layout is ideal for open-concept living spaces or larger rooms where the rug serves as a unifying foundation.
Placing all furniture legs on the rug creates a cohesive look and makes the seating area feel intentionally designed. The rug should be large enough to accommodate the entire sofa, chairs, and coffee table, leaving a balanced border around the edges. This approach works best with a 9’x12’ or larger, ensuring the space feels well-proportioned.

Layering rugs is a great way to add texture, dimension, and visual interest to a living room. This approach works well when using a larger neutral rug as a base, such as a jute or sisal rug, with a smaller patterned or plush rug on top.

- Measure Before You Buy– A rug should fit your space and furniture properly. make sure the rug is under all furniture legs at least 6 inches and leave at least 12-18 inches of exposed flooring around the edges for a balanced look.
